Cafe Clave was one of the spots I was lucky enough to encounter this summer. As a friend of several West Philly aficionados, I had the opportunity to visit here for a Friday salsa music open mic night. The crowded little joint was loud and teeming with people, both listening inside and dancing to the music outside. It had a great feel, even if we were packed like sardines in the bathroom line. The interior is brightly colored and cozy; tables are arranged in a way that invites you to strike up a conversation with your neighbor. The food is Cuban-themed, with the traditional Cuban panini and empanadas as well-reputed menu headliners. I had already had dinner and decided to split a (gigantic) cookie with my friend. Its cakey consistency was similar to a black and white cookie's, but the batter was sweet potato-flavored. The icing was cream cheese-based and perfect to satisfy a sweet tooth. This was a unique spot with something different to try, but I would recommend it more for social getaways than trying to crack down on studying.
