Gummy vitamins are big business in the United States. In fact, one New York Times article notes that gummy vitamins and supplements make up $1 billion of the overall $41 billion supplement market.

So then how do I pick a vitamin gummy?

But when there are so many different gummy vitamins to choose from, and you’re not sure which are best for you, how do you pick? Do you mix and match gummy supplements for the health benefits you’re after? And do the extra ingredients in gummy vitamins come with any drawbacks?

The Benefits of Taking Vitamin Gummies

If you’re interested in adding vitamin gummies to your daily routine, whether because you can’t stand taking pills (a common problem for adults, and definitely nothing to be ashamed of) or because you just prefer the tasty, fun experience of popping a candy-like gummy in the morning, here’s what to consider when buying vitamin gummies and which are the best to buy online.

Extra Vitamins Without the Side Effects

Right off the bat, one of the best benefits of vitamin gummies is that you’re adding more vitamins to your diet, and you don’t have to take a pill, and you’re not getting the bad side effects that pills sometimes come with (like an upset stomach).

Vitamin gummies often taste great and, for both adults and kids alike, make them much more of a treat and less of a chore.

You can even take multiple vitamin gummies to get the combination of vitamins and supplements you want, without having to swallow multiple giant pills.

No Extra Cost

In many cases, the price of vitamin gummies is no different than the price of any traditional pill vitamin or supplement. It’s a better experience without having to fork over more cash.

The Cons of Taking Vitamin Gummies

But despite the obvious pros, there are a few downsides to taking vitamin gummies.

Extra Ingredients: Added Sugar

Many of these vitamin gummy products have some ingredients that you might want to avoid, such as gelatin (an animal product, in case you’re vegetarian or vegan), glucose, food coloring and preservatives.

The added sugar is, for many, one of the most worrisome ingredients that vitamin gummies contain. If you're watching your sugar intake and taking multiple vitamins or supplements with added sugar, it can add up pretty quickly.

Extra Ingredients: Animal Products

Likewise, some vitamin gummies contain animal products that aren’t okay for vegetarians or vegans. Gelatin is a common gummy ingredient that’s made from a variety of animal parts, including animal skin, bones and tendons.

However, that doesn’t mean that all vitamin gummies are a non-option for vegans and vegetarians. Some vitamin gummies are made using agar-agar, which is a seaweed product that’s sometimes used in place of gelatin.

Possible Danger to Kids

Children love candy, and if you have a kid in the house, you likely know that they’re all too eager to sneak a little candy in when they can. If you treat vitamin gummies like candy and give them to your kids as a treat, then they could come to think of them in the same way — and try to sneak in some extra throughout the day.

This could lead to possible illness and even death under the right circumstances, so be sure to teach your child about vitamin safety and then keep those vitamin gummies where they belong — out of children’s reach.

Differing Ingredients

Unfortunately, because of the way gummies are made, it can be difficult to always have the same amount of vitamins and supplements in every single gummy, in every single bottle of one product.

For example, sometimes vitamin gummies are actually sprayed with a supplemental ingredient, but if one gummy receives more of that sprayed ingredient than another while on the factory line, then that gummy will have more of a certain vitamin than another gummy in the same bottle.

Similarly, some supplemental ingredients degrade within gummies over time, which means when you open up a new bottle of vitamin gummies, you may be getting more of a certain vitamin every day than you are when you get to the bottom of the bottle.

Before Taking Any Vitamin…

But some dangers and risks come with taking any vitamin, not just vitamin gummies.

Consider Your Actual Vitamin Needs

Taking too many vitamins can actually harm you to varying degrees. For many people who live healthy lifestyles and get balanced diets, vitamins are completely unnecessary. Those individuals are likely getting all the vitamins they need from their diets.

Those who need vitamins the most are those who have a vitamin deficiency, whether because of lifestyle choices or a health condition. (Unfortunately, many adults do have vitamin deficiencies due to poor eating habits).

Beyond this, your vitamin needs aren’t going to be the same as your spouse’s or your child’s, so a family should usually not be sharing the same vitamin gummies. Every family member should have their own gummies.

As with all healthy choices, it’s best to talk to a doctor before adding vitamins and supplements to your diet.

Keep Poor Regulation in Mind

Additionally, keep in mind that it’ll be up to you and your doctor to decide when a vitamin or supplement is right for you. The FDA doesn’t regulate the safety of vitamins and supplements before the public sale in the same way that it does food and pharmaceuticals.
