How long should underwear last? After browsing the web, I found that as a general rule of thumb, you should replace underwear every six months to a year.

Now, if this is a conspiracy surrounding underwear brands to sell more undies, I don’t know. I know I’ve worn mine for up to two years, and I hope you don’t think less of me for it.

I might argue that a good pair of underoos won’t break into their full potential until after a few solid wears. Are we to just toss these in the trash right at their peak performance? I personally don’t think so.

When I was younger, I would use Christmas as my queue to toss out the old and throw all my new X-mas socks and underwear into the rotation. Those days are long gone and I’m now left to fend for myself when it comes time to purchase new undergarments.

So where do I begin?  How do I make the right choice so I don’t wind up back in the same position six months from now?

Let’s find out. Here are the 10 best men’s underwear out there and how to pick the best blend for your individual needs.

Cotton Vs. Polyester

As the great underwear debate rages on, one thing that seems to go back and forth is the material used. Cotton is by far the most common for men’s underwear, but many newer brands are boasting a polyester blend for their garments.

I think what this ultimately comes down to is a personal preference.

Men who tend to be more active in their day might lean towards a polyester material. Polyester is a moisture-wicking fiber, meaning that it will draw sweat away from your skin and into the surface of the fabric, making it evaporate quicker. This also helps with chafing if that is something you need to worry about.

However, cotton tends to be more breathable. So if sweating isn’t really an issue, you stand to be more comfortable, cool and dry with natural fiber underwear.

Boxer Shorts Vs. Boxer Briefs

Like I said before, underwear is all personal preference. There is no right or wrong (although I can think of some options that are certainly frowned upon).

A ranking by Real Men Real Style says men’s boxer briefs are the overall winner based on four things: appearance, comfort, functionality and versatility.
