When it comes to models, there are lots of stereotypes. They’re stupid. They’re vapid. They’re starved. They’re fake. You’ve heard them all…
But we’re not here to perpetuate stereotypes.
The truth is, for the average model, modeling is actually hard work. It’s really not as glamorous as people think.
The sample sizes are small, so you can’t just eat whatever you want. Squeezing your size nine foot into a size seven shoe is painful (shoes come in small sample sizes as well).
If you’re successful, you have to fly all over the world doing photo shoots and runway shows. If you’re not that successful, you have to get used to hearing the word “no” over and over again.
Between the jetlag and the judging, there’s more to modeling than just being pretty. It takes a thick skin. Yes, it can lead to fame and fortune, but most models have to deal with their fair share of pitfalls and problems along the way.
We’re not here to insult models or criticize the entire fashion industry. We’re merely presenting you with the evidence of what people that are in (or have been in the business) have to say. You can decide what you think for yourself.
Ready to know what the insiders think about the biz?
Here are 15 quotes about modeling that will shock you!
“A lot of modeling is how much crap you can take.” – Lauren Hutton
“When I came out of school I didn’t even think that modeling was a job.” – Heidi Klum
“I did that Dior Couture 60th anniversary show in July. It took so long to get ready, I think I would have rather been watching.” – Linda Evangelista
“I look at modeling as something I’m doing for black people in general.” – Naomi Campbell
“Since the beginning we’ve been super selective about what shows I would do. I was never one of those girls who would do like 30 shows a season or whatever the f–k those girls do. More power to ’em.” – Kendall Jenner
“I would like to say I’ve achieved goals, but really, modeling is all luck. You’re not really achieving anything. The least hardworking person with a special face can be huge and have a whole world of success.” – Brooklyn Decker
“My favorite go-to modeling move was called “Be hungry.” That was it. You just stand there, and be hungry. And that’s all I have to say about the modeling industry.” – Amber Heard
“Modeling is the best because you have to look hot, which comes easy to me, you know. I’m blessed with that.” – Ashton Kutcher
“Modeling is basically ‘Buy more stuff! Don’t you want some more stuff? It will make you look ten years younger and men will like you!’ If I’d wanted to be a salesperson, I would have got a job selling.” – Uma Thurman
“Modeling is a tough job, your co-workers are your rivals, it really puts a damper on your perspective of other girls.” – Adriana Lima
“If you don’t want your pants pulled about, don’t become a model! Join a nunnery, there’ll always be a place for you in the convent.” – Karl Lagerfeld
“The thrill of acting is making a character real. Modeling is the opposite of real. It’s being fake in front of the camera.” – Cara Delevigne
“What people want to know is, OK, what’s after modeling? It’s not just OK anymore to model until you’re 25 and then stop and be a housewife.” – Gigi Hadid
“The industry has died as far as modeling has gone, and I’ll tell you why. Magazines are featuring the Halle Berrys and Sarah Jessica Parkers, all the actresses. Makeup companies are featuring all the celebrities. All the models have died.” – Janice Dickinson
“Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.” – Kate Moss
Okay, so maybe that last one isn’t that shocking. (It’s actually the mantra that a lot of us say in our head whenever we’re tempted by a chocolate cupcake or a piece of lasagna!)
But aside from the eloquence of Ms. Kate Moss, the rest of these quotes are pretty shocking.
What Do People Really Think About Modeling?
We can only hope that Ashton Kutcher was joking. We can only assume that Janice has a jaded perspective on the industry because she was, after all, the first self-proclaimed supermodel. And Kendall… well, let’s just say that Kendall should realize that not every model comes from Calabasas.
The truth is that when you’re a big-time model, you do interviews, you get quoted, and people follow your every move. And that means that you’re bound to make mistakes and say things off the cuff that you might not otherwise say.
So again, we’re not judging, and we’re not trying to perpetuate the stereotypes.
After all, Karlie Kloss runs a coding camp for girls. We love that!
Chrissy Tiegen, with 12 million followers and counting, is the unfiltered supermom/cool girl/queen of Twitter (and she’s married to the current SMA.) Cindy Crawford, with her beauty brand and furniture line, has a net worth of 100 million dollars!
Most models are a lot more than just a pretty face and perfect body.
We love fashion, and we love the runway shows that inspire us to develop our wardrobes for the season ahead. So for all the aspiring models out there, go for it! Just know that the job isn’t quite as glamorous as it seems.
