Anyone living with a toddler knows heavy-duty cleaning products (and lots of them) are a necessity. The loads of laundry and dishwasher cycles we run each week seem endless. We’ve been using laundry detergent pods and dishwasher pods for a while now out of pure convenience.

Recently we decided to try out a more eco-friendly option. We’ve been on the wool dryer ball train for years, but we have never really ventured into an eco-friendly option for our other laundry or dishwasher products.

That is where Dropps came in! Continue reading for a full in-depth Dropps review from our family.

The Dropps Story

The Dropps vision originated as a way to protect sweaters. We’ve all been there before… you wash a sweater, and it comes out of the washing machine looking much different than when you put it in. It could come out four sizes too small, in a weird shape or look like a totally different material than when it went in. It’s unfortunately happened to all of us!

Founders Jonathan Propper and Lenore Propper Schwartz (his mom) invented a biodegradable detergent that was gentle on natural fibers and would leave clothes looking good (and lasting) longer that were free from harsh chemicals.

Removing enzymes and other traditional elements that commercial cleaners are comprised of resulted in a cruelty-free cleaner that could fit dirt but didn’t ruin your clothing or skin! But then they realized long gone were the days of heavy jugs of laundry detergent and the handy dandy pods and the Dropps name was created. The rest was history!

Dropps prides itself on its sustainability, which results in low-waste packaging, no animal testing and eco-friendly products. Additionally, all of their products are made in the USA, the Midwest to be exact.

One of Dropp’s primary goals is to reduce single-use plastic. Did you know that over 68% of traditional laundry jugs are not recycled? Dropps products come in a recyclable cardboard box that is 50% recycled itself, which as of this year has helped minimize plastic jugs in our landfills or oceans by 3.5 million.

The outside packaging of the pods is made with polyvinyl alcohol, which is completely biodegradable and water-soluble.

Their shipping is 100% carbon neutral, and they partner with 3 Degrees to help offset the emissions used during delivery.

You can feel good using the Dropps products, knowing they are doing everything they can to preserve and protect Mother Nature while also keeping you and your family fresh and clean.

How Dropps Laundry Pods Work

Dropps laundry detergent pods work like any other laundry pod. Just drop in your pod (1 pod=1 load or 2 pods for an extra-large load), then add your clothes, and start your washing machine.

A few tips when using the pods:

  • Make sure your hands are dry (remember, they dissolve in water)
  • Don’t add it into the dispenser; just throw it in the bottom of the washer drum
  • Never cut open or try to unwrap the pod
  • Keep out of reach for pets and children
  • Don’t worry if you don’t see suds; that is intentional
  • For smaller washers, use small-load pods
  • Don’t overload your washer (your clothes will not all be cleaned and could leave behind detergent residue

Are Dropps safe for all washing machines?

Yes! You can use the Dropps pods on front-loading, top-loading, stackable, standard and even mini washing machines. In addition, they are fully compostable, so you won’t see any on your clean clothes after they are done in the washing machine.

Hard water vs. soft water

Dropps pods work in both hard and soft water. You might want to use the small-load pods if you have soft water, but hard water can stick to the standard 1 to 1 ratio for washing.

Are Dropps good for sensitive skin?

Yes! Dropps has actually been certified and approved by the Safer Choice program. This means their products are a great option for babies or anyone in your family with sensitive skin.

Shelf life of Dropps laundry pods

If stored in a cool, dry place in closed packaging, your Dropps pods are good for 2-3 years. Meaning buying in bulk might be worth it for your family!

How Dropps Dishwashing Detergent Pods Work

The Dropps dish detergent pods are similar to other detergent pods; although they are a tad smaller than your standard Cascade or Finish pods, they still work just as well. Plus, you don’t have to shove them in there to close the latch before you start the wash cycle.

The dishwashing pods come in an unscented or lemon scent and can completely replace your liquid detergent or pods, just like the laundry pods. They are not see-through like the laundry pods, so don’t worry about mixing them up; you will know which ones are for the dishwasher!

A few tips when using the pods:

  • Only use one pod at a time
  • Make sure your hands are dry (they dissolve in water)
  • Never cut open or try to unwrap the pod
  • Keep out of reach for pets and children
  • Store in a cool, dry place

Where to Buy

Dropps products are all sold online through their website. Not working with retail or brick-and-mortar stores helps keep the costs down for both the consumer and Dropps. They do, however, offer a wholesale/bulk pricing structure if you are looking to get a bunch of products all at once.

Also, by only being able to purchase through their site, they can ensure their eco-friendly packaging and shipping methods.

Pricing will depend on what products you buy, how much you buy and how often. Dropps offers a 25% discount if you set up a subscribe and save recurring order.

Below is a breakdown of popular items and pricing:

  • Stain & Odor Detergent – $26-$66 (64, 140 and 210 count)
  • Dishwasher Detergent – $25-$50 (64, 120 and 180 count)
  • Oxi Booster – $25-$50 (64, 120 and 180 count)

Shipping & Delivery

Orders take about 5-7 business days to arrive in the continental US. (Alaska and Hawaii residents, it could take up to 3 weeks to receive products.) If you spend over $29, your shipping is free, but if not, it is an additional $4 for ground shipping. To keep their carbon-neutral promise, they do not offer expedited shipping.

Right now, they only ship within the United States.

Returns & Cancellation Policies

Dropps prides itself on its products, and they offer a 30-day risk-free trial for first-time buyers. This gives you the chance to really get a feel for the new product before making a final decision. If you are not completely satisfied, you just have to contact their customer service team, and you’ll get a full refund!

If you are on a recurring order, you can cancel at any time before they ship by logging into your account. If you purchased a one-time order, contact the customer service team as soon as you can to see if they can cancel it. As long as your products haven’t shipped, you should be good!

If you are a subscribe and save member but need to skip a particular order, you can do that within your account and just change the date for the next shipment.

Since Dropps prides itself on its eco-friendly laundry and home products, they definitely don’t want to ship something out if you aren’t going to use it or don’t want it!

Personal Experience

Two boxes of dropps laundry detergent

I was super excited to try out Dropps after reading more about their mission and ingredients for everyday products. We tested out the laundry and the dishwasher pods.

Do Dropps Clean Well?

Despite the pods being quite a bit smaller than your standard Tide or Cascade pod, I would say they do clean just as well. I didn’t notice any streaks or residue left behind after the dishes wear done in the dishwasher.

Our dishes were sparkly clean, and I think the Dropps dish detergent pods just as well as any other commercial dishwasher pods.

Do Dropps Smell Good?

It was harder for me to tell if the dishwasher pods smelled good, but I also could not tell you what the dishwasher soap we use now smells like! We tried the lemon-scented pods, but honestly, I didn’t notice any scent.

For the laundry pods though, I do think they left a nice “clean & crisp” scent. Usually, we put a little essential oil on our dryer balls before putting our clothes in the dryer since we ditched dryer sheets and fabric softeners years ago, but we didn’t have to add any with these pods.

I don’t think they need an additional scent booster like other laundry pods/detergents.

Are Dropps Safe?

Open box of dropps laundry pods

I hate to admit, I have never really been one to examine my laundry products or dish detergent pods before. However, after reading more and more about the Dropps mission, my mindset has shifted.

They are definitely safe, and almost all of their products fall between an A-B range on the EWG site. While Tide pods scored an F and Cascade scored a D.

They are also great for people with allergies or sensitive skin, and you don’t have to worry about weird dyes or other chemicals you can’t pronounce inside the pods. With a young child in the house, we usually opt for something in the “sensitive skin” line whenever possible.

I love the fact that they come in scented or unscented options. You can choose between various scents like Fresh Air, Lavender Eucalyptus, Lemon, Orange Blossom and more.

I also like the fact that they are small and clear, there are no unnecessary colors or dyes added to the pods.

All in all, I think the Dropp pods are a great choice for everyone. Everyone has to do laundry and dishes, so it is great you can buy in bulk and set up a recurring order. As a mom, I am down for anything I can do to automate purchases!

The biggest con I found was in the dishwasher pods. While it is great that the packaging is low-waste, many of our dishwasher pods were broken before I opened the box. This resulted in dish detergent all over my counter and floor when I opened the box. I had to search through the box to find the pods that had broken and clean up the mess so my animals and toddler didn’t get into any of the detergent residue.

For some people, it might be a con that you can only get these online and not pick them up when you are doing your weekly grocery shopping, but I do love the fact that you can order in bulk and set and forget, so it isn’t a con for everyone!

Closing Thoughts – Dropps Review

I admit I had no idea Dropps was around before Tide pods and that there was a much more environmentally-friendly option on the market.

While you can’t pick up Dropps laundry and dishwasher pods from the grocery store, it’s great that you can order in bulk and subscribe and save so you have one less thing to think about.

Dropps has created a pretty powerful competitor to mainstream brands, and if you are looking for ways to save the environment without breaking the bank, they are a great option.

Our household will not be buying Tide pods anymore!
