The chilly weather is here once again. And while it can be fun to break out your favorite holiday decorations and cozy sweaters, and drink a cup of hot cocoa, there’s also a less romantic side to winter: dry, cracked skin.

Not only is it painful, but it can also make you feel self-conscious. If your hands, feet, and elbows are starting to resemble those of a pachyderm, piling on the moisturizer may not be enough. This is why a paraffin wax machine could be a real skin saver.

Maybe you’ve already had a paraffin wax treatment at a spa. If so, you know that they’re great for removing dead skin and making it feel soft and silky smooth. But if you don’t have the budget to treat yourself very often, then you may want to consider investing in a paraffin wax machine.

Available in various shapes, sizes, and price points, they can help to keep your hands and feet well-groomed despite the ravages of winter. And beyond the skin-deep benefits, they can also help with blood circulation, which in turn helps to relieve the pain of aching joints and arthritis.

But before we dive into our favorite paraffin wax machines to round out your beauty routine, let’s take a quick look at what paraffin wax is and all the ways it can benefit you.

The Benefits of Paraffin Wax Treatments

Paraffin wax is the same wax used to make candles. It’s colorless, odorless, and has a low melting point which makes it safe to use in liquid form.

Not only does paraffin wax help to remove dead skin cells, but because it forms a physical barrier on the epidermis, it also helps to prevent water loss. But its moisturizing properties go further than that.

When you dip your skin into paraffin wax, it helps to draw the body’s own moisture to the surface of the skin to combat dryness!

Equally important for some people are the therapeutic benefits of paraffin wax treatments.

Because paraffin wax retains heat well it acts as a form of thermotherapy. It actually transmits heat to the core of the affected area, which increases blood flow, relaxes muscles, and can relieve the pain from arthritis, injuries, and achy joints (which can in turn help to increase flexibility).

To sum it up, here’s what a paraffin wax treatment can do for you:

  • Helps to remove dead skin cells
  • Draws the body’s own moisture to the surface of the skin
  • Forms a physical barrier on the skin to prevent water loss
  • Leaves skin smooth, silky, and radiant
  • Increases blood circulation and relaxes muscles
  • Relieves joint pain from osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and other joint issues
  • Can increase flexibility and mobility
  • Can help speed recovery of hand and foot injuries

Who Should Avoid Paraffin Wax Treatments

While paraffin wax treatments are generally considered to be safe, there are some situations in which they should be avoided. Don’t use paraffin wax if:

  • You have any open cuts, wounds, or burns
  • You have sensitive skin (paraffin wax is a byproduct of petroleum)
  • You have poor circulation or diabetes
  • You have a loss of sensation in the hands or feet

Also, if you’re using a paraffin wax treatment to treat an injury, be sure to consult your doctor first.

Our Favorite Paraffin Wax Machines

A little later in this article, we’ll cover the basics of using a paraffin wax machine and what to look for when you buy one. But for now, let’s dive into our favorite paraffin wax machines to relieve dry skin and keep it soft and silky all year round.

1. Salon Sundry Paraffin Wax Bath

This professional-grade paraffin wax machine has the size and depth to comfortably dip your hands, feet, and elbows comfortably (and separately, of course). It also has a durable metal exterior and integrated handles which make it safer and easier to move around.

But the most important feature is the adjustable temperature control and digital readout which means you can heat up the wax quickly and then lower the temperature so that it cools down enough to dip the area you’re treating.

The main drawback is that this machine does not come with any mitts or plastic liners. But considering the quality of the paraffin wax bath machine, we still think this is a very good buy.

Pros: Good size and depth, durable metal exterior, integrated handles, temperature controls

Cons: Comes with no accessories, some people find the instructions to be confusing

2. Ejiubas Paraffin Wax Machine

If you’re looking for a wax warmer machine that comes with a lot of accessories, this model from Ejiubas includes 2 pounds of wax, 2 thermal mitts and booties, 200 glove liners, a thermometer, and brushes.

Another plus is that it’s able to melt 2 pounds of wax in just 20 minutes. However, since it does get quite hot and has no warming mode, you’ll have to unplug the unit and wait until the wax cools to a proper temperature (which you can check with the included thermometer).

This paraffin wax warmer gets very solid reviews from customers, but if your foot is bigger than a USA women’s size 8.5, you may want to consider a larger machine. Some reviewers also noted that the wax included was not quite enough so be sure to buy an extra bag of wax if you opt for this machine.

Pros: Lots of included accessories, fast melting time, 12-month manufacturer warranty

Cons: No warming mode for the wax, not quite enough wax included to fill the tub, may be too small for people with larger feet

3. Karite Paraffin Wax Machine

This machine from Karite has a unique auto-lid that pops open when the wax has completely melted (so that the wax can start to cool down to the proper temperature). It also has adjustable heat settings and a digital readout of the temperature.

The skincare machine will accommodate women’s feet up to size 12 and men’s up to size 14. Included with the machine you’ll find 8 bags of wax, 30 plastic glove liners for hands, 30 plastic liners for feet, 1 brush, 1 silicon scraper, and thermal mitts for both hands and feet.

Customers like this machine for its efficient heating time and excellent customer service. The biggest drawback seems to be that the included was is lavender scented so if you’re extra sensitive to aromas, you may want to purchase it separately.

Pros: Unique auto-lid, good capacity, temperature controls, a good amount of included accessories

Cons: The wax included is lavender scented which may be an issue for some people.

4. WeWax Paraffin Wax Machine

If you don’t want to sit around waiting for your wax to melt, you may want to consider this wax melts machine from WeWax that has a “reservation mode” which allows you to set a time for the wax to be melted up to 24 hours in advance. Otherwise, it takes about 45 minutes to melt the wax.

It also has temperature controls and a digital readout. Included in the kit are 2 packages of wax, 1 pair of thermal hand mitts, 1 pair of thermal booties, 25 pairs of plastic liners for both hands and feet, and 1 brush.

However, you should be aware that the included wax is peach scented in case you have a sensitivity to aromas.

Pros: Unique reservation mode, temperature control, a good amount of accessories

Cons: The included wax is peach scented and you need to visit the manufacturer’s site for good directions on how to use the machine.

5. Siloon Paraffin Wax Machine

This paraffin wax machine from Siloon also has a smart “reservation mode” so that you can time your wax to be ready at a certain hour. Or, you can use manual controls to adjust the temperature of the wax and monitor the temperature with the LCD readout.

Included in the package are 6 packages of lavender wax melts, 1 pair of thermal hand mitts, 1 pair of thermal booties, 100 plastic liners for hands and feet, 1 brush, and 1 silicon spoon.

Pros: Adjustable temperature, reservation mode, lots of accessories

Cons: The included wax is lavender scented

6. Therabath Professional Paraffin Wax Bath

If you’re suffering from joint pain, an injury, osteoarthritis, or fibromyalgia, it’s convenient to have melted paraffin wax available throughout the day for multiple treatments. In that case, you may want to consider this class II medical grade and extra deep model from Therabath

It keeps the wax melts at an appropriate temperature with two internal thermostats and can be run safely for 24 hours a day.

You will pay a pretty penny for this machine and it comes with wax and no other accessories. But if you’re looking for a machine to help with pain relief, this is a solid buy.

Pros: Deep bath, can be run 24 hours a day, keeps wax at a safe temperature

Cons: Expensive and comes with wax but no accessories

7. Conair True Glow Paraffin Wax Machine

If you’re looking for a machine that’s both portable and economical you may want to consider this model from Conair. Just be aware that this smaller machine will not accommodate all foot sizes (though anyone can dip at least their heel into the machine).

The machine comes with 1 pound of wax but no accessories and may take up to 3 hours to melt the wax. It also has no temperature controls.

However, if you want an economical paraffin wax warmer to use mainly on your hands for hair removal or routine skincare, this model will get the job done.

Pros: Includes one pound of unscented paraffin wax, compact and portable

Cons: May be too small for people with larger feet, takes a long time to heat up

Step By Step Guide to Using a Paraffin Wax Machine at Home

Every paraffin wax machine should come with its own setup, melting, and safety instructions which you should read carefully. Once the wax is melted, here’s what to do:

1: Now that the wax is melted, you’ll want to switch the machine off or turn it down to warm mode.

2: Next and most importantly, you’ll want to test the temperature of the wax to make sure it’s not too hot for your skin. (The ideal temperature is no higher than 125F.)

You can do this by using a thermometer or using a spatula or a brush to apply a little wax to the inside of the wrist. If the wax is too hot, allow it to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before testing it again.

3: Once the wax is at the proper temperature, you should clean and put some moisturizer on the area you’re going to treat (which will make it easier to peel the wax off later).

4: Now you can dip the desired area into the wax and leave it there for a few seconds.

5: Next, remove the area from the wax and allow the wax to dry. Repeat this procedure at least 10 times until a thick layer of wax has formed around the area.

6: Once the layer of wax is thick enough, place a plastic liner around the area and place it in an insulated mitt for heat retention. Leave the wax on for at least 15 to 20 minutes.

7: Now remove your liner and mitt and peel off the wax.

8: Once all of the wax has been removed from the treated area, run it with some moisturizer or oil.

What to Look for in a Paraffin Wax Machine

If you’re ready to add a paraffin wax machine to your beauty regime, here are a few things to keep in mind before you purchase one.

Capacity

Paraffin wax machines come in various sizes as do our hands and feet! Before you purchase, be sure to check the measurements and capacity to ensure your hands, feet, and elbows can be completely submerged in the melted wax.

It would be super disappointing to receive your machine only to find your feet don’t fit in it!

Wax Melting Time

Depending on the machine, the wax melt cubes can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours to fully melt. It’s all related to how high the maximum temperature of the machine is. Obviously, the higher the maximum temperature, the faster the wax will melt.

The precaution here is that higher temperatures and faster melting times can mean that the wax gets TOO hot. That’s why it’s so important to test the temperature of the wax before using it. If the wax temperature is above 125F, be sure to let it cool before using it.

Temperature Control/Warming Mode

Not all paraffin wax machines have temperature controls or a warming mode, but they’re very convenient for adjusting the temperature to your needs and keeping the wax in a liquid state once it’s melted.

If you choose a machine without temperature controls, be sure to have a thermometer on hand.

Wax and Accessories

Some paraffin wax machines come with wax and other convenient accessories like plastic liners, mitts and spatulas. To make sure you’re getting the best deal, compare prices and the accessories that come included with the machine. Also, be sure to check if the manufacturer is providing enough wax to completely dip your hands and feet.

Scented Wax

If you have sensitive skin, you may want to avoid scented waxes. If not, feel free to explore your favorite aromas as an added indulgence. Lavender paraffin wax is a great way to unwind and relax after a long day while adding orange essential oil to your wax could energize you.

Winter Is Coming

If the thought of cracked, dry skin has you dreading the frosty temperatures, a paraffin wax machine can help you to keep your hands, feet, and elbows silky smooth and add the needed hydration your skin and cuticles so desperately need throughout the winter and the rest of the year. Furthermore, it can help with joint pain from medical conditions and injuries.

Be sure to consider capacity, temperature controls, and what accessories are included before you purchase. And always be sure to test the temperature of the wax before dipping the treated area.

Perfect for bringing the spa experience to your home, a moisturizing paraffin wax machine is a great way to practice self-care and keep those hard-hit areas of your skin aglow.
