Looking for new ways to make your home a bit more environmentally friendly?

You’re not alone.

Sustainability isn’t just a concern – it’s a necessity.

The good news is that millions of people are looking for easy and affordable ways to reduce their carbon footprint, protect our natural resources, and reduce the use of single use plastics.

And that’s where wheat straw comes into play.

If you’re concerned about sustainability, you’ve probably already come across wheat straw plates in your online searches for sustainable products.

But what exactly is it? Is it truly sustainable? Is it worth buying?

Here’s everything you need to know about wheat straw plates, plus some of our favorite wheat straw products to replace your current kitchen plastics.

What is Wheat Straw?

Wheat straw is a wheat production byproduct. Sometimes, it’s collected to feed animals, but other times, it gets a new life as a plastic alternative. This can be done in two ways.

Wheat straw contains a cellulose compound called lignin that can be combined with other safe ingredients (like sugar) to create an alternative to plastic. Manufacturers can also use wheat production byproducts without additives to create a pulp (similarly to how manufacturers break trees down to make paper). The pulp can be molded into products of various shapes and sizes, including plates, cups, and food storage containers.

When wheat straw and other food-grade materials are combined, the result is wheat straw plastic. It becomes a bioplastic, or biodegradable plastic, made from biological materials rather than fossil fuels.

Wheat straw plastic can create everything from coffee cups to food containers, and the result is an item that’s more durable and more environmentally friendly than your average plastic item that takes hundreds of years to break down. Additionally, the manufacturing process for wheat straw plastic items is less environmentally harmful, too, with less energy needed and fewer toxins involved.

Are There Any Downsides to Wheat Straw Plastic?

For the average consumer, there are very few downsides to wheat straw plastic plates and other kitchen items made from wheat straw. They’re lightweight, antibacterial, and anti-odor. And depending on the construction, they can even be microwave-safe, freezer-safe, and dishwasher safe.

Wheat straw plastic breaks down quickly when tossed, and it can also be recycled and turned into new wheat straw plastic items. Wheat straw items are also totally gluten-free.

Plus, since wheat straw plastic is made from a byproduct that’s often discarded, it can create an extra source of income for agricultural producers.

The one downside to wheat straw plastic items and wheat straw plates is that some manufacturers combine the wheat straw with filler ingredients that make their products not as eco-friendly as they could be.

You can tell that a wheat straw item has been made with other, less sustainable ingredients by looking at the materials used to make the item. If you see a “PP” or a “poly-” ingredient, then the wheat straw item either has been made with a non-biodegradable plastic, or it won’t be able to be recycled without special care.

But isn’t a wheat straw item made with a little bit of real plastic better than a fully plastic item?

It depends on how you look at it, who you ask and how committed you are to a fully sustainable lifestyle.

Some people abhor the idea of “greenwashing” — aka, making a product sound more sustainable than it really is — and steer clear of wheat straw plates that contain any plastic whatsoever in favor of truly biodegradable items.

100% wheat straw items are intended to be used one time, then disposed of. Blended wheat straw items are intended for long-term use. A wheat straw bioplastic product will offer longevity but come up short on biodegradability, so the type of wheat straw product you choose often depends upon how much importance you put on sustainability.

Wheat Straw Plates FAQ

Reading this article because you want a quick question answered?

We’ve got you covered.

Here are some wheat straw plate FAQs to help you decide if this is a product you want to buy for your home.

Are wheat straw plates microwavable?

Wheat straw plates with PP and plastic components are usually microwave safe. Those made from 100% wheat straw are intended for single use, much like Styrofoam plates and paper plates.

Microwave-safe wheat straw plates are usually dishwasher-safe as well.

How long do wheat straw plates last?

If you purchase wheat straw plates made with PP or another food-grade plastic, your wheat straw plates could conceivably last as long as you want them, just like any other normal plate in your pantry. Natural wheat straw plates made from 100% biological materials are generally only suitable for one use.

Is wheat straw better than plastic?

In general, yes. Wheat straw plates are better for the environment (and for your health!) than plastic. While wheat straw plates aren’t a 100% perfectly sustainable option, they are a better alternative to plastic plates.

Other Bioplastic Alternatives

Is wheat straw plastic the only bioplastic available?

The answer is no.

There are many bioplastics available today. Some are cellulose-based. Some are starch-based. Some are protein-based. Other bioplastic alternatives similar to wheat straw include those made from hemp, rice, banana peels and avocado seeds.

The most popular bioplastic is polylactic acid, made from plant starch. But since it contains

that “poly-” prefix, don’t expect it to break down in your backyard composter. It’s only biodegradable under certain circumstances.

Many bioplastics are greenwashed to make consumers think that they’re biodegradable when really they’re only made from biological components. To date, there are no regulations as to how manufacturers can use the term “bioplastic.”

It’s difficult to say that one bioplastic is the best and most sustainable. It all comes down to the individual manufacturer and their processes.

Are they blending their biological components with regular, ol’ fashioned plastic?

What’s the carbon footprint of that so-called “bioplastic” plate?

In the end, picking the best, most sustainable and most eco-friendly bioplastic product comes down to your research and your needs as a consumer (because, after all, if you’re buying a wheat straw plastic plate that you intend to use for years and years, that little bit of PP probably isn’t going to hurt anything).

Make Your Kitchen Just a Little More Sustainable

Whether you choose a fully sustainable, eco-friendly, one-time-use wheat straw plate option or opt for a PP-blended product that you can use long-term, switching to any product with a smaller carbon footprint is a good idea.

With wheat straw plates, bowls, cups and other kitchenware, you can feel good knowing that you’ve taken a small step in a more sustainable direction.
