There’s nothing more annoying during the winter months than dry, chapped or flaky hands. No matter what you do, no matter how much lotion you slather on and no matter how much water you drink, you still feel all rough and ragged. That’s exactly why you need to add a whipped body butter to your daily beauty routine.

What’s the Deal With Whipped Body Butter?

What exactly makes whipped body butter a little more helpful than your standard lotion? While both lotion and body butter can provide your skin with the hydration it needs, body butter ups the ante with a buttery and thick texture.

Body butters often contain ingredients like shea butter or cocoa butter, both of which can help revitalize your skin with deep, long-lasting hydration. If you’ve ever been frustrated by oily, thin, greasy-feeling lotion that doesn’t seem to actually soak into your skin, leaving you high and dry the first time you wash your hands, body butter is for you.

Ready to try it for yourself? Here are 12 of our favorite whipped body butters!

A Homemade Whipped Body Butter Recipe

Have none of the above options caught your eye? You can easily make your own DIY whipped body butter at home!

For this tutorial from The Prairie Homestead, you’ll need to purchase shea butter, coconut oil, sweet almond oil and essential oil. The recipe requires one-fourth of a cup of coconut oil, one-fourth of a cup of shea butter, one-fourth of a cup of sweet almond oil and anywhere from 10 to 20 drops of your essential oil.

Combine your ingredients, except for the essential oils, in a double boiler on medium heat until the butter and coconut oil have liquified. Then, let it cool until it becomes opaque and partially set. Add your essential oil and then whip the body butter until it’s fluffy using a stand mixer or with a hand mixer.

From there, you can store your batches of body butter in the containers of your choosing, like a glass jar. A mason jar is always a good option, especially if you want to wrap your homemade body butter as Christmas gifts. This recipe makes enough for one jar with virtually no prep time and very little total time.

Once you’re comfortable with this starter recipe, you can get creative, adding in oils like Vitamin E or scents like peppermint and bergamot by swapping out the carrier oils.

Picking the Right Body Butter for You

Whichever body butter option you go with, make sure that you’re picking the best option for your skin’s needs.

If you have sensitive skin, avoid body butters with allergens or potentially irritating ingredients like dyes, preservatives or parabens. Instead, look for those hydrating, natural ingredients such as avocado oil, cocoa butter and shea butter.

Consider additional benefits that you could get from your body butter, too. Body butters can do more than just provide hydration. A body butter with anti-aging properties, firming ingredients or even a CBD infusion might just be your perfect fit.

Getting the Most Out of Your Body Butter

Once you’ve chosen the best whipped body butter for your needs, make sure that you’re getting the most from your new skincare product.

Use your body butter before bed for overnight moisturizing. For dry feet and rough heels, slather on your favorite body butter before sliding into some cozy, comfy socks. You might just be surprised at how effective such a simple addition to your nighttime routine can be.

Use your body butter after you shower to help your skin lock in moisture rather than lose it as your skin dries. You can also leave your favorite body butters next to the sink as a reminder to lather up each time you wash your hands. Additionally, make sure to use your body butter after shaving or using a sugar scrub. It will help you repair your skin!

Increase the amount of body butter that you use in the winter months as well. You may find that you need to use double or triple the amount you might use in the summer, especially if you’re outdoors often.

For even more moisture, you can combine your body butter with a body oil for a multi-step moisturizing routine. Just use your body butter after a shower and then apply the body oil after the butter is completely absorbed. The oil will help to lock in the moisture without leaving you feeling overly greasy.

Body Butter FAQs

You’ve got questions… We’ve got answers!

What’s the Difference Between All of These Ingredients?

Shea butter, cocoa butter, mango butter — does it really matter which one you pick? Yes! These ingredients, while all moisturizing, do have differing benefits.

Cocoa butter, derived from cacao beans, is high in Vitamin E and antioxidants, and it is highly touted for repairing the appearance of damaged skin. Think scars, stretch marks, et cetera. Cocoa butter also has a long shelf life and it is on the thicker side.

Shea butter, derived from shea trees, contains Vitamin E as well, but also fatty acids, Vitamin A, Vitamin F and collagen. Because of this, it’s great at helping your skin form a natural barrier to protect itself from future damage.

Comparatively, mango butter contains more fatty acids than both cocoa butter and shea butter, meaning it usually provides more moisture. However, mango butter is hard at room temperature, so you may find that you have to heat up any body butters that contain it, though that’s as easy as just rubbing it between your hands.

How Else Can I Use My Body Butter?

In addition to using your body butter for all-over moisture, you can also use it as a conditioner or a makeup remover or primer. You can also use body butter to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars if your butter contains the right ingredients.

Are Body Butters Vegan?

Most body butters are plant-based and vegan. They’re also more environmentally-friendly than some other skincare and body products, as they aren’t petroleum-based. For the kindest body butter, make sure to check a particular brand’s policy on animal testing.

Who Shouldn’t Use Body Butter?

While most users will see a benefit to using body butter, it’s not the perfect product for everyone. If you have excessively oily skin or you suffer from acne breakouts on your back, chest or other body parts, you may want to avoid body butter, as it could clog your pores. Additionally, if your skin is dry due to an internal problem, such as a medical issue or just dehydration in general, rather than external factors, like the environment or weather, then you may not see the same results as others.

How Long Does Body Butter Last?

Most body butters will last up to a year or longer… If you don’t use it all up before then! If you’re using your body butter regularly, you won’t need to use too much at a time. Most brands recommend a quarter-sized dollop or less for your entire body, and most containers provide enough butter to last a few months of continuous use.

How Should I Store My Body Butter?

Keep your body butter in a sealed container. Place the container in a dry, cool space when not in use.

Add a Little Moisture into Your Life

Hydrated, moisturized skin is healthy skin. Add a body butter into your skincare routine to start seeing the benefits now.
